The Honesdale Lions Club in Association with the Wayne County Community Foundation recently awarded its first scholarship. The Scholarship is entitled, “The Merle and Earl Walters and Honesdale Lion’s Club Vision Scholarship.” The funds for this scholarship were given by Mr. Earl Walters in memory of his wife, Merle, who had lost her vision. The original gift that Mr. Walters gave the Honesdale Lions Club was used to help those suffering eye injuries or diseases. The conversion of the fund to a scholarship was very unique in that it may be awarded to either a recent high school graduate or one that will finish college and begin their training in the field of optometry, ophthalmology or special education vision therapy. The first scholarship winner was William Keyes a 3rd year Optometry student at Ohio State University. Will is the son of John and Susan Keyes, Aldenville.

With this selection goes a grant from the Foundation’s Ben Franklin Fund of $1,000 to charity of Mr. Shook’s choosing.

The selection was made by the Board of the Wayne County Community Foundation in recognition of Harold’s years of service to his community. Harold, also affectionately known as Shooky, went into business in 1969 at the Andres Hotel (the Pub) and in 1971 opened Shooky’s Distributors. In 1987 he opened the Lake Region IGA and recently the Lake Region Complex. His supermarket received the Five Star Award from the IGA Corporation which is their highest rating. Part of that recognition was based on his extensive community service. Giving back to the community has always been something that he and his family have taken pride in. To date through is contributions and funds raised by their store programs, golf tournaments, bike runs, car shows and kidsfest, he has returned over $250,000 to the community. Additionally, he and his family founded the Lake Region Community Dock Foundation as a way of helping non-profit organizations in the community and to also help families who are experiencing “hard-times.” Funding for this program comes from his practice of contributing two cents from every sale of every IGA product sold…and those two cents add up!

Of his generosity, Harold states: “We are so fortunate! The community with their support has made our business what it is and there is no better feeling than when someone walks up to you and says, ‘thank you, you hardly know me but you really have helped us through a very tough time in our life.’ That says it all!” The Foundation believes it also and is proud to make this Award to Harold Shook.

Harold is the son of Harry and Agnes Shook. He is one of five children, three sisters – Mary Bolton, Arlene Kennedy, Lorraine Bachman and brother, Garry. He graduated from Hawley High School, attended the University of Scranton and served six years in the PA National Guard. He is married to his wife, Anita, for forty-nine years. They have three sons, John, Jim and Jeff.

The Foundation will host of dinner to honor Harold on Thursday, November 11, 2010 to be held at the Inn at Woodloch Pines. Additionally, the Foundation is preparing a commemorative booklet for Harold. Tickets or ads may be purchased by contacting the Wayne County Community Foundation at 570-251-9993.
